New River, the second oldest river in the world, weaves in and out of Alleghany County  near the Va. border.  Its scenic beauty is experienced by fisherman and canoeists alike.  Many private homes and lots are available on or near the New. Canoeing the New RiverThe New River offers some of the best small-mouth and redeye bass fishing in the region.  In addition, the river is stocked with muskie.  Also native to the river is the flathead catfish.

Canoeists can launch from their own front yard for a trip down the New or from several roadways and bypasses which cross the river.  Calm water and rapids mix with local scenery to make an enjoyable trip for all. 

The Little River and many other local designated trout streams are stocked with rainbow and browntrout throughout the county.

The county is principally drained by the New River, which flows along the western and northern border, and its main tributary, the Little River, which runs through the central portion of the county.
The North Carolina portion of the New River is designated a  National Scenic River and offers camping and other recreational opportunities along its shore.
